Life On The Inside

We pass her by all the time.

Sometimes we wave and yell hello, even though we know that we’re too far to be heard.

Still, she always looks so friendly and majestic as she grazes within the confines of her owner’s estate.

Head down, slowly working her way from one end of the fence to the other…everyday.

Until one day, we took the route by the side of the land.

She was there, a little far off, but still – her beauty was hard to miss and resist.

So we pulled over, eager to take her picture.  With my camera out, zooming in, the kids call out to her, “Hi, horsie! Hi girl!”

She heard.
She trotted.
She came closer.
She looked directly at us.
She neighed.

And it seemed as if she was curtsying too.
Knee bent and nozzle nodding low…
Perhaps her way of saying hello?

As the kids tell her all the nice things,
And as I record her graceful movements,
I stare and wonder just how happy or unhappy she might be…

Who knows what life is like on the inside?
Her days behind the fence?
Is she lonely?
Was she always alone?
Was there someone who used to love her?

I wanted to rip apart the fence and let her free.
To run and find a better place to live her days.
To always to be outside…
And never be inside ever again.
